Solar panel end of year usage charge?
So we moved into a new house about a year ago and we had our panels registered with edison. Our bills have been anywhere from 10 to 40 dollars a month. And now at the end of the yr they sent a bill saying we owe them 3k now. WTF!!! They say those are are usage charges for the year. How is that possible when every month we get a bill so small and showing the kilowatt usage and how much it rolled back. The meter constantly rolls back all day.
Must be some weird laws over there, or some very dishonest action. If the meter is actually rolling backwards, you should be getting checks, not paying bills. If you make more energy than you consume, the utility is required by federal law and regulation to buy it from you (see PURPA and coinciding regulations).
But the usage fee could theoretically be valid (though doubtful). Many-most utilities charge customers in two ways – one is a flat rate per customer for maintenance of the hardware (power plant, lines, station, maintenance), and the other part of the fee is the amount you use.
I would call them and demand an explanation, and you may need a lawyer if it doesn’t get fixed.
