What licenses or permits do I need if I’m starting a online business selling solar panels in California?
I will be paying tax on the product straight from the distributor. I will be selling online and maybe installing a few in my area. I just need to know what licenses and permits I have to have in the state of California? Do I have to pay sales tax even if i’m already paying tax when I purchase them?
You need a reseller’s license from the Franchise Tax Board. That way, you will be exempt from paying tax on panels that you buy for resale. And yes, you would have to pay sales tax based on your sales in California. That does not mean you have to charge sales tax to your customers, only that you have to pay it.
Run the numbers carefully. Can you offer a competitive price, or some other feature that makes your panels better than other online ones?
